The Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC) Institutional Audit is scheduled for MARCH 2010 for the University of Zululand. This self-reflective exercise requires a concentrated harnessing of institutional intellectual resources, time and energy in the months leading up to the audit. The institution is required to produce an honest, self reflective portfolio, covering the strengths, weaknesses, achievements and improvement plans for the 19 HEQC Audit criteria (see HEQC Criteria for Institutional Audits, 2004; HEQC Framework for Institutional Audits, 2004) These criteria focus on teaching and learning, research and community engagement and the support services that underpin these core activities. Our University is expected to provide an account of the effectiveness of its quality assurance and quality management policies and systems, demonstrating with evidence how it assures itself that the quality of its offering is sound. The self—evaluation report (SER) will provide a composite picture of how the institution works, a picture informed by all its constituencies. Clearly, our strengths and weaknesses will be uncovered in the internal self-evaluation process. However, the institution has to develop improvement plans and demonstrate how it intends to address efficiencies within a specified time frame. The SER will be followed by a site visit from an HEQC panel of peers from 14-19 March 2010.
